What to expect
Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a medical imaging technique used in radiology to form pictures of the anatomy and the physiological processes of the body. MRI scanners use strong magnetic fields, magnetic field gradients, and radio waves to generate images of the body’s musculoskeletal system. MRI does not involve X-rays or the use of ionizing radiation, which distinguishes it from CT or CAT scans.
Review your medical history Before your scan, your technologist will ask about your medical conditions and any implants, metal or devices in your body. This includes pacemakers, stents, joint replacements or surgical clips.
What (NOT) to wear The tech will have you remove all metal items such as jewelry, piercings, hair accessories, eyeglasses, belts, clothing with buttons/zippers/metallic designs, hearing aids, etc.
Sounds You’ll hear some loud thumping, knocking and tapping sounds coming from the machine. These noises are completely normal. For your comfortability, you will be provided with earplugs and/or an eye mask if necessary
Remaining still When you go in for your MRI scan, you’ll lie down on the table and will need to stay still. The machine moves as you’re positioned to obtain the clearest images. If you’re anxious about your MRI, you can ask your doctor if anti-anxiety medication is a possibility but knowing what to expect when getting an MRI can be helpful in relieving the anxiety some MRI patients experience.
Duration The entire scan might take anywhere from 20 minutes to two hours, depending on the complexity of the scan. Relax and close your eyes while the machine does what it’s supposed to, as you need to be still as the machine takes the images. The technologist oversees the whole process and can talk with you through the speaker if you have questions or need to stop for some reason. They’ll do their best to make you feel comforted and at ease during the whole scan.
